Written by Ariana Bacle Posted on October 27, 2017, at 8:04 a.m. Eastern Image: Netflix The first season of Stranger Things premiered in the summer. The month of July was scorching and bright, a season best known for terrible television just before autumn arrives and ushers in a never-ending stream of fresh, superior programming. Therefore, it was unexpected that Stranger Things—a Netflix series that debuted with little fanfare—became the breakout success that it did. Sure, there was something unique about it on its own, but the timing was also advantageous. It was the kind of eerie find that's often saved for the autumn and winter.
In addition to being a reaction to Hopper's forgetfulness, her pouting is also a reaction to her wish to be a child and be with Mike. She wandered the woods after fleeing the Upside Down through a hole that lead her back to Hawkins Middle, and we saw flashbacks of this throughout the episode. The flashbacks don't reveal much about her other than the fact that she was filthy, hungry, and depressed, but the fact that she is going back to these times indicates that she feels trapped. She blindfolds her eyes, sets the TV to static, and then somehow travels to a different reality where Mike is ringing her on his walkietalkie. Her feeble murmur of his name is insufficient.
It's not just Eleven who's having a rough night. While trick-or-treating with his friends, Will is out on the town when several obnoxious teenagers suddenly jump out at him and call him names like "Zombie Boy" and "freak." His episode is set off by it, and when it does, the spider-like creature is even more massive and vibrant than before. After sprinting down a flight of stairs, he closes his eyes and crouches against a wall until Mike, who is worried, shakes him free. It's devastating, and Noah Schnapp captures Will's fear so masterfully without seeming overly dramatic. Despite not getting as much screen time as the others, the young actor shone last season, and it's good to see him develop in a more noticeable way this time around.
Once again, Max is their new friend, and Lucas, Dustin, and he go trick-or-treating in Hawkins' streets. Though we still don't know much about her, she's starting to come out of her shell. Billy (Dacre Montgomery), who plays Bret Michaels as a teenage lad but is really a jerk, is her brother. Earlier in the episode, he becomes enraged with her and threatens to have her skateboard home if she is late again. He bemoans the state of the town in the car, implying that their presence is solely due to her. Then, just for kicks, he nearly runs Mike, Dustin, and Lucas over. Cool person. He meets Nancy and Steve at the same Halloween party later that evening. She's still.
Nancy's bluntness is not to Steve's taste, and he leaves her at the party. No matter how many times your wasted girlfriend has called you names when intoxicated, it still seems like a really horrible idea to dump her at a party. He's certainly not the most considerate gentleman. Jonathan, thankfully, is there to take her home and put her to bed. Bullshit is not Jonathan.
