On September 30, 2019, news of Stranger Things 4, the fourth season, broke.[2] This season, in contrast to previous ones, was released in two volumes: the first volume, comprising seven episodes, debuted on Netflix on May 27, 2022, and the last two episodes were added five weeks later, on July 1, 2022.[3][4] Eight months have passed since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought the previous season to a close, when the fourth season opens in March 1986. The season is notable for tracing multiple tales in a variety of locales, such as Hawkins, California, Nevada, Alaska, and Russia. In addition, basketball stars Jason Carver and Patrick McKinney, eccentric "peanut butter smuggler" Yuri, jail guard Dmitri Antonov, and leader of the Hellfire Club Eddie Munson are introduced.

Eight months had passed since Hawkins saw the carnage and devastation caused by the Battle of Starcourt. Our circle of pals is struggling with the fallout and is experiencing separation for the first time; things haven't gotten any easier as they navigate the challenges of high school. A new and terrifying supernatural menace emerges at this most vulnerable moment, posing a grisly conundrum that, if answered, might ultimately put a stop to the horrors of the Upside Down.

Test subject 010 is the subject of Dr. Brenner's experimentation until an unexplained incident claims the lives of all but Eleven of the participants. Eight months after the events at Starcourt Mall, in 1986, Joyce, Will, Jonathan, and Eleven relocated to a new home in Lenora Hills, California. There, Eleven faces bullying from other students at Lenora Hills High School and struggles with the loss of her powers. Jonathan and Nancy talk about their difficult long-distance friendships with their pals in Lenora and Hawkins at the same time. Jonathan talks about it with the pizza delivery boy Argyle, and Nancy talks about it with Fred Benson, another reporter for The Weekly Streak. After Joyce destroys a porcelain doll that she received in the mail that appeared to be from Russia per Murray's directions, she discovers a secret letter that saysnear a flashback, Hopper is portrayed as having survived the Key explosion beneath Starcourt Mall, but he is taken prisoner by Soviet forces and taken to a gulag near Kamchatka. Joyce and Murray contact "Enzo," who turns out to be Dmitri Antonov, a jail guard that Hopper has bought off, by calling the number listed on the message that was given to Joyce. Antonov instructs them to deliver a ransom of $40,000 to his Alaskan contact. When Eleven is being bullied by her classmates Angela and Jake at Rink-O-Mania, Mike takes a plane to California to visit her. Eleven then uses a roller skate to revenge against Angela. When Max returns to Hawkins, she tells Dustin that she witnessed Eddie flee the night Chrissy passed away. 

At Yuri's Fish n' Fly, Joyce and Murray present the ransom money to Yuri Ismaylov, the peanut butter smuggler who is Antonov's contact. But Ismaylov gives them pills with the intention of selling them, along with Hopper and Antonov, to the Soviets in order to make more money. After leaving the jail camp, Hopper is quickly apprehended again. Dr. Owens' ally, Agent Ellen Stinson, tells Jonathan, Mike, and Will that Lt. Col. Sullivan won't harm them since her colleagues Harmon and Wallace will defend them. However, Sullivan's forces soon attack the house, and the boys manage to flee with Argyle's assistance, taking an injured Harmon with them. Victor Creel, who is incarcerated, tells Nancy and Robin about his family being plagued by ghosts and how his daughter Alice and wife Virginia eventually escape.

Reliving her friendship with a lab orderly, Eleven is cautioned not to put her trust in Brenner. She also remembers being made fun of by 002 and the other test subjects, which made her think she was the one behind the lab massacre. Suzie assists Mike's team in finding the coordinates for the Nina Project. Hopper informs the other prisoners that the substantial feast they are served is meant to get them ready to be fed to an adult Demogorgon that has been captured. Later, remembering that fire is the Demogorgon's weakness, he pockets a lighter. Murray and Joyce decide to have Murray pretend to be Yuri in order to break into the jail after forcing Yuri to drive them to a nearby town where he keeps his belongings.
